SOUTH KOREA - Low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) of the H7N6 sub-type been found in ducks on a farm in the south of the country. The veterinary authorities sent an Immediate Notification dated 4 November to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).
The report describes the discovery of LPAI in a flock of 23,410 ducks at a farm at Sukma-ri in the Cholla-Namdo region in the south of the country. The infection was found during routine surveillance on 27 October and all the birds were subsequently culled.
The report adds that, as part of the continuous avian influenza surveillance programme, Jeollanam-do Institute of Livestock and Veterinary Science tested samples (faeces and laryngo-pharyngeal swabs) collected from a duck farm in Sukma-ri on 27 October. Haemagglutination test results were positive on 1 November. National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service (NVRQS) found avian influenza antigen (H7) by PCR on 3 November and confirmed it as low pathogenic avian influenza virus (H7N6) by gene sequencing on 4 November.
As a precautionary measure, all poultry in the affected farm were culled on 3 November, the report concludes.
The virus is of a different sub-type from the one found in the west of the country earlier last month.
