No end yet to egg shortage

QATAR - Consumers looking for eggs in hypermarkets around town are still searching in vain as the shortage caused by a ban on poultry from Saudi Arabia has not eased.

Although a ban on eggs from India, the cheapest available before the embargo, has recently been lifted and large consignments are on their way to Doha, it will be another couple of days before they are available, industry sources said.

A Gulf Times survey of five major hypermarkets yesterday revealed a bleak picture – no eggs whatsoever and no idea when they will be arriving. The eggs available at small grocery shops were going for QR1 each. “We received a few trays of eggs four days ago, from the UAE and a local farm, but the stock ran out within hours,” said a manager at an Al Meera outlet.
