Newcastle Disease Reported in Switzerland

SWITZERLAND - The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) reports that there is an outbreak of Newcastle Disease in Switzerland.

The country's veterinary authorities sent an Immediate notification to the OIE yesterday, 21 October. The disease was first confirmed on 8 October.

It has been reported that pigeon flocks at a farm in Bern have been affected by the disease. The most likely origin of the infection is a contact with wild pigeons.

Several measures have been applied to curb the spread of the disease in the country. These include:

  • Stamping out
  • Dipping / Spraying
  • No vaccination
  • No treatment of affected animals
