Andalusian - Chicken
The Andalusian chicken is a Mediterranean breed that is white, black or blue in color. The blue color is a result of breeding a black hen with a white cock. If two blue colored birds are bred together, they produce only black or white offspring.
This breed has an attractive plumage and laced edges to the feathers, making them popular for showing. It is a noisy bird that is very active, and a free range set up is recommended as they are good foragers. They are also hardy and can tolerate both hot and cold climates, although the comb can be susceptible to frost bite. These rugged birds can be flighty, so enclosures must have high fences. The hens do not have a tendency to go broody.
When the pullets reach 5 or 6 months, they begin laying eggs. On average, a mature Andalusian hen will lay around 160 large white eggs per year. The weight of males can reach up to 3.2 kg and the females can weigh 2.5 kg. Bantam versions of this breed are available.
