Araucana - Chicken
Araucana chickens originate from Chile, South America. They are an unusual looking breed, with beards and tufts of feathers around their faces. They have triple pea combs, crests but no wattles. In the U.S, true breed Araucunas are rumpless with no tail feathers, however the Araucana breed standards in Europe do include tails.
There are twelve standardized breed colors, and both large fowl and bantams are available. They are friendly and easy to handle. This breed lays blue eggs, and begins to lay at around 20-24 weeks of age. They lay around 180 per year, although some variations in egg color may occur. The hens do not go broody and make unreliable sitters.
When crossed with another breed the offspring produces blue/green eggs. The larger males weigh around 2.7 - 3.2Kg, and the females weigh 2.25 - 2.7Kg. For the smaller bantams, the males weigh 740 - 850g and the females 680 - 790g.
