Aseel - Chicken

Aseel, or Asil, is a breed of chicken originally from India, and was bred for the purpose of fighting. Now a rare species, they have a strong upright stance and a small pea comb but no wattles. They have a hawk-like shape to the beak and yellow legs. Their feathers are tough and close together.

Although not good layers, the females do go broody and make good, attentive sitters. The chicks are slow to mature and can often be aggressive with each other. This breed is not suitable to confinement due to their fighting nature, and birds that are involved in squabbles need the room to escape if needed. They are happy to interact with humans and can easily be tamed.

The males weigh around 3 kg, and the females around 2.5 kg. Today, these birds are kept as ornamentals for exhibitions. The recognised color varieties include dark, white, spangled, black breasted red and wheaten.
