Baheij - Chicken
The Baheij is a breed of chicken that was developed at the Borg-El-Arab Poultry Research Station in Matrouh, Egypt. ‘Baheij’ is the name of a village close to the research station, after which the breed has been named. It was developed as researchers were looking at ways they could improve the performance of other local breeds, in the meat production and egg laying capabilities.
The Baheij breed was developed from the Silver Montazah and Alexandria, breeds that were used as the base population. Its plumage has a similar look to the Light Sussex, with light grey tail feathers that are crossed with darker bars. The beak and skin is yellowish white in color, and the earlobes are red. The comb is duplex. Research has been carried out to further improve the Baheij breed, where birds that show favorable traits are selected to breed to produce a larger body and a heavier weight.
