Barnevelders - Chicken
The Barnevelder chicken breed originates from the Dutch town of Barneveld. It is a dual purpose breed that lays a good number of brown eggs. There are a variety of colors available for this breed such as red, black, laced silver and partridge. It has yellow skin, a single comb and red earlobes.
They are hardy birds and can tolerate being kept in smaller enclosures, but they are suited for free range set ups due to a tendency to become overweight if they do not get exercise. They are a good breed for beginner poultry keepers as they are docile in temperament, tolerate each other very well and are easy to handle. The hens do tend to get broody, they are reliable at sitting on eggs and they are good mothers. The males can weigh around 3.9 kg and the females weigh around 2.95 kg. Large and bantam sizes are available.
