Black - Turkey
The Black turkey is also known as the Norfolk Black or Black Spanish. They originated from Mexico and other South America countries before being imported to Europe, and they are thought to be the oldest turkey breed. They have black feathering with a green sheen, a black beak and red wattle.
Black turkeys are easy to keep although they do require a fair amount of space due to their large size. They are ideal for free range set ups and they enjoy foraging. They have an inquisitive character and make great guard animals that make a lot of noise if disturbed.
They are hardy and tolerate cold weather, although adequate shelter must be provided to protect them from rain, snow or wind. In hot weather, they require plenty of shade. They are slow to mature compared with other turkey breeds, and they are prized for producing tasty meat that has a slight gamey flavor.
