Brahma - Chicken
Brahmas are a large breed of chicken that have feathered feet with a fluffy appearance. They are named after the Brahmaputra river in India, although it has been suggested that the breed was created in the USA from another Asian species of large fowl, the Shanghai.
Brahmas have attractive plumage, and because they have lots of feathers it makes them hardy in colder temperatures. The have a red pea comb and wattles, and the legs are yellow. They come in a variety of colors; white, buff Columbian, light, dark and gold. They need dry conditions, otherwise mud can get matted in the feathering on the feet. Brahmas are friendly and docile in temperament, tolerant of each other and other breeds, and are good brooders. They lay good quantities of large brown eggs.
Brahmas enjoy foraging but do not roam as far as other species, so they are the ideal back-garden bird. They do not fly, and can be contained by low sided enclosures, however due to their large size they do require plenty of space. The males can weigh around 5.5 kg, and the females 4.3 kg on average.
