Bronze - Turkey
Bronze turkeys originate from the USA. The breed developed when early colonists brought European domestic turkeys with them and they bred with the wild turkey population. They have a metallic bronze and green sheen to their feathers that is close to the appearance of the wild turkeys. They are slow growing, long lived birds that produce a rich flavored meat.
The females lay creamy colored eggs that are spotted. They are flighty and enjoy foraging in a free range set up. Because modern turkeys grow more quickly they are preferred for farming, so the breeding of heritage breeds such as the Bronze turkey is left to enthusiasts and small scale farmers, however there is an increasing market for heritage breeds. If breeding Bronze turkeys, the larger sizes should be selected as many of the birds are becoming smaller, and do not fit with the standards of the breed. Mature males weigh around 11.3 kg and the females 7.2 kg.
