Buckeye - Chicken
The Buckeye breed of chicken originates from Ohio, USA. It has shiny, red plumage, yellow legs and a pea comb. It is a dual purpose bird and produces a good amount of medium sized eggs. The hens even lay throughout the winter months. They are an active breed that is good at foraging, so it is suited to a free range environment. They have even been known to catch mice.
Buckeyes have a good, calm temperament and enjoy interacting with humans. They also have a range of vocal sounds that other breeds of chicken are not able to make. They are hardy birds that can tolerate colder climates, particularly as their pea comb is not susceptible to frost bite. They mature quickly and to support their growth, they require more protein in their diets compared to other breeds. The males weigh around 4 kg and the females 2.9 kg. Bantam sizes are available.
