Catalana - Chicken
The Catalana is a breed of chicken that originates from the Catalonia region of Spain. It is sometimes referred to as the ‘Prat’, named after the farming region of El Prat. They are buff in color with black tails that have a green sheen. They have large, single red combs and white earlobes. The comb flops over on the females but it upright on the males.
It is a dual purpose breed that is very hardy in warm climates. The hens are good layers and can produce around 150 large white eggs per year. They do not tend to go broody. They are a very active breed that enjoys foraging and tends to avoid human contact, so they are not suited to confinement and require a free range set up. It is a quick growing bird and the mature males weigh around 3.6 kg and the females 2.7 kg. Bantam sizes are available.
