Chantecler - Chicken
The Chantecler is a rare breed of chicken that originated from the Quebec region of Canada. It was the first Canadian breed to be developed, and it was produced by cross breeding Dark Cornish, White Leghorn, Rhode Island Red, White Wyandotte and a White Plymouth Rock. This is what gives the White Chantecler chicken its color. There is also Partridge color version that was produced by cross breeding Partridge Wyandotte, Partridge Cochin, Dark Cornish and a Dark Leghorn.
The Chantecler is a dual purpose breed that is hardy and tolerant of cold climates. It has a small cushion comb and wattles that are not susceptible to frost bite. The hens are good layers of brown eggs. They have gentle temperaments and are easy to handle, making them a good choice for beginner poultry keepers. The mature males in the standard size weigh around 4 kg and the females 3.1 kg. There are bantam versions available.
