Chinese - Goose
Chinese geese originate from Asia from the native wild swan geese, and there are brown and white varieties. The brown variety has a rich brown and fawn coloring and a dark russet neck stripe. Both varieties have a large knob at the top of the bill and closely fitting feathers.
They are a small goose breed that are active foragers and like to graze on grass and other plants, and they can be used as an organic ‘weeder’. They are very productive and have good flavored, lean meat.
The females lay around 80 eggs per year, which is more than other goose breeds. Chinese geese have docile temperaments, although males can be aggressive when the female is sitting on eggs. They are good, alert guards that make lots of noise when surprised, or if they spot something they are unsure of. Mature males weigh around 5.4 kg and the females 4.5 kg.
