Dominiques - Chicken
Dominique chickens are a heritage breed that is now rare. Originating from the USA, this old breed has also been used to develop the Sussex and Dorking chicken breeds. It is medium sized and has black and white barring on the feathers. They have red wattles and yellow legs, and are similar to Plymouth Rocks in appearance, however Dominques have rose combs.
They are a hardy breed that has plenty of feathering and can tolerate cooler climates as the comb is not susceptible to frostbite. They enjoy active foraging and can often find most of their food for themselves so they are great for a free range environment, yet they are adaptable to being kept in smaller runs. A good dual purpose breed, the hens lay around 180 brown eggs per year. They do not tend to go broody, although they do make good mothers. Dominiques are easy to handle and have friendly temperaments. The mature males weigh around 3.1 kg and the females 2.2 kg.
