Dutch Bantams - Chicken
Dutch Bantams are often referred to as ‘true bantams’ as they have not been bred from larger sized breeds. They originate from the island of Bantam in the Dutch East Indies. There are many color varieties, such as blue, silver partridge, golden partridge, light brown and cuckoo. They have a single red comb and wattles, white earlobes and a strong beak.
The hens lay a good number of eggs during the summer months and around 200 per year. They are very fertile, good brooders and attentive mothers. This breed is active and lively, have good temperaments and enjoys foraging in free range set ups, but can adapt to smaller enclosures. Being flighty, adequate enclosures are required. They are a hardy breed that is easy to keep and inexpensive to feed, but they do need to be provided with shelter in cold temperatures. The mature males weigh around 550 grams and the females 450 grams.
