Faverolles - Chicken
Faverolles originate from Northern France, from the village of Faverolles, and they are a dual purpose breed. There are three different types of this breed, the original Faverolles from France, Dutch bred Faverolles and British Faverolles. They have beards and muffs, feathered legs, five toes and a single comb. The loose feathering makes then appear larger than they are. There are different varieties available such as black, laced blue, salmon, ermine, white and cuckoo.
They are a hardy breed that can tolerate colder conditions. The hens lay around 200 tinted eggs per year, and they continue to lay throughout the winter months. Faverolles have a gentle temperament and they are easy to handle, often becoming very tame. They are active, alert and enjoy foraging. The hens often go broody, are reliable sitters and make good mothers. They do tend to get picked on by other breeds when kept together, so adequate space must be available. Due to the feathered legs they are also more susceptible to scaly leg mite than other breeds. Mature males weigh around 4.5 kg and the females 4 kg. There are bantam sizes available.
