Gallus Inauris - Chicken
Gallus Inauris is a breed of chicken that was discovered in Chile by Professor Salvador Castello of Spain, and it was the name given to what we now call Araucuna chickens. They have a distinctive appearance, with no tail feathers, a small single comb and muffs that are often referred to as ‘earrings’ on each side of the face. These ‘earrings' are attached to the face by a thin thread of skin. The two color varieties were described as white and red, and they have clean legs that are white or yellow.
This breed lays eggs that are blue in color and sometimes speckled. It was later decided that Gallus Inauris was not a native breed, but one that had resulted from years of selective breeding by Dr Bustos. Bustos had discovered tailless birds, Colloncas, from the jungles of Araucania and then bred them with another local breed, Queteros, which had the earrings or tufts. The breeding has resulted in the Araucuna breed of today.
