Jersey Giant - Chicken
As the name suggests, the Jersey Giant is a large breed of chicken that was developed in New Jersey, USA. The color varieties are black, white and blue, and they have a single red comb. Being large birds they do require a lot of space, yet they do not fly so low enclosures will be sufficient to contain them.
They are a hardy breed that are good foragers. They have a calm temperament and are tolerant of other members of the flock. The hens do go broody and make good mothers, however care must be taken when incubating or brooding due to their size. The chicks are slow to grow, taking around 6 months to develop their angular frame. It is then another few months before they put on a good amount of meat. Mature males can reach 5.9 kg in weight, and the females average 4.5 kg. The hens lay around 160 large eggs per year.
