Junglefowl (Green) - Chicken
Green Junglefowl originate from the island of Java, and are one of a few breeds of chicken that are able to sustain flight. They are attractive birds with dark green and multi-colored plumage. In their natural habitat, their diet consists of marine and freshwater creatures and plants.
In captivity, they cannot be fed the same food as other domestic chickens. Nutritious fruits like pomegranate, paw paw and dried cranberries should be given, but avoid fruits with high sugar content like grapes, apples and pears. Commercial chicken feed should also be avoided. It is recommended to feed a source of freeze dried shrimp or krill instead, plus there are specialist vitamins that should be added as a supplement.
This breed is not suitable for beginner poultry keepers. The Green Junglefowl is susceptible to many of the domestic chicken diseases, and do not have the levels of immunity of other breeds. They also do not tolerate cold conditions and they require tall, large enclosures so they can fly and climb.
