La Fleche - Chicken
The La Fleche breed of chicken originates from France, from the town of La Fleche in the Valley of La Sarthe. They have black plumage, black legs and feet, a small V-shaped comb and long wattles. The tail has some long ornamental feathers. It is a breed that is now rare, but is a good dual purpose bird. It is a good forager suited to free range set ups but is adaptable to smaller enclosures.
They are flighty so enclosure sides must be high enough to contain them. This active breed has good character but does not feel as comfortable around humans as other species of chicken, so they are not recommended for beginner poultry keepers. The hens are good layers and produce up to 200 white eggs per year. The males weigh around 4 kg, and the females around 7 kg. There are also bantam versions of this breed available.
