Lakenvelder - Chicken
The Lakenvelder is a rare breed of chicken that originates from Germany. It is characterized by its distinctive black and white plumage. There is also a blue color version available. They are small in size, have a single comb with five points and orange/red eyes. It have medium sized red wattles and ear lobes.
Lakenvelders are quick to mature and are good utility birds that produce a good number of small white eggs. They are also kept for showing because of their attractive plumage. They are flighty and can be rather wild in temperament so they are not recommended for beginner poultry keepers. They do not have the tendency to go broody, are good foragers and prefer a free range set up. They do not enjoy tightly confined spaces as they like to avoid human interaction. The males weigh around 2.75 kg and the females around 2 kg. There are also bantam versions available.
