Matrouh - Chicken
Matrouh chickens are a cross breed that originate from the Borg El-Arab Poultry Research Station of Apri, Egypt. The efforts of the research station are to create new breeds of chicken that are an improvement to the local breeds, in both egg and meat production. The local breeds are not particularly suited to being kept in farmed conditions, so hybrids have been developed to produce a chicken breed that is more adaptable to being farmed. The Matrouh chicken is a cross between a white leghorn and another developed breed, Dokki4. The birds have a shape that resembles the Leghorn, and a plumage color that is similar to a Plymouth Barred Rock. It has white earlobes and a single red comb. Mature Matrouh chickens reach an average weight and the hens can lay around 190 eggs per year. This is an improvement compared to the productivity of the other local breeds.
