Minorca - Chicken
Minorca chickens are a breed that originates from the Mediterranean. It has an angular shape that makes it appear rather large, and the long tail feathers add to its grand appearance. There are rose and single combed varieties, and they have large wattles and earlobes. They are a slow growing breed that are mainly kept for egg production, and the hens lay a good number of large white eggs. This breed is also kept for exhibition purposes.
Minorcas have a good temperament and enjoy human interaction. They are a flighty breed so any enclosures must have suitable boundaries. They are good foragers and enjoy a free range set up, but they are also adaptable to be kept in smaller gardens. They are hardy birds, although care should be taken in the winter months to prevent the large comb from getting frost bite. The males weigh around 3.6 kg and the females 2.9 kg.
