Modern Game - Chicken
Modern Game chicken breed was developed from breeding Old English Game with Malay chickens. Modern Game chickens have a slender appearance and are kept for exhibition purposes, as they do not lay many eggs and their slight build does not produce much meat.
They were originally bred in the 1850s as an improvement to the Game Cock that was traditionally used for fighting, although as it became illegal the Modern Game birds were bred as ornamentals. There are a variety of colors available, including brown, red, white, golden duckwing and wheaten.
They have good temperaments and are easy to handle. They are an active breed that enjoys foraging, yet they must have adequate shelter as the close, tight feathers mean that they do not tolerate cold climates well. They are also less susceptible to getting parasites than other breeds. Males weigh around 2.7 kg and the females 2 kg. Bantam versions of this breed are available.
