Muscovy - Duck
Muscovy ducks are the only breed of domestic duck that is not descended from a Mallard. It has been developed from the wild breeds of Central and South America. There are a many varieties, yet blue, black, white and chocolate are most commonly known.
They are mainly kept for their meat, which is leaner than other duck meat. The females lay a small number of eggs, are often very broody and hide their nests. They are quiet birds, the drakes do not quack but make a hissing sound. They are good fliers and enjoy roosting in trees, and they do not bathe in water like other duck breeds, so a shallow tray is enough to keep them happy.
Being an active breed that are good climbers, they require a free range set up. They are good foragers and are known to eat vermin. This breed is fairly large and the mature males can weigh around 5 kg and the females 2.5 kg.
