Naked Neck (Turken) - Chicken
The Naked Neck, or Turkan, is a breed of chicken that was developed in Germany, though originated from Transylvania. It is a breed that certainly lives up to its name. It has no feathers on the neck or face, giving it a very unusual appearance. The skin turns red in the sun, making it look rather like a turkey. The rest of the feathers are also less in number than other chicken breeds, and they come in a variety of colors, such as black, cuckoo, white, red, blue and buff. The hens are good layers and produce brown eggs.
This breed is docile in temperament and is easy to handle. They are adaptable to being kept in free range environment or in smaller enclosures. Due to their lack of feathering, they are not great brooders, although if a hen has a small amount of eggs to sit on she should be able to keep them insulated. Naked Necks are hardy birds, although due to the minimal feathers they do not tolerate colder climates. The males weigh around 3.4 kg and the females 2.9 kg.
