Old English Game - Chicken
The Old English Game chicken is one of the oldest breeds, and was bred in the UK from fighting cocks. They have tight, close feathers and a strong beak. There are a variety of colors, such as Black Breasted Red, Golden and Silver Duckwing, Brown Red and White. They are a good dual purpose bird, and the hens lay a good amount of white eggs, although they are most kept for exhibition purposes. The hens are also reliable brooders.
Old English Game chickens are not suited to being kept in confinement, and mature males must not be kept together as they will fight. This hardy breed is noisy and active. They enjoy foraging and can fend for themselves. They are suited to free range set ups, and prefer environments that are similar to keeping game. Mature males weigh around 2.2 kg and the females 1.8 kg. There are bantam sizes available.
