Orpington - Duck
Orpington ducks originate from Orpington in Kent, UK. The breed was developed by Mr. Cook, who also created the Orpington chicken. It was bred from Cayuga, Runner, Aylesbury and Rouen breeds. The most commonly seen color variety is buff, but there are blue, chocolate white and black varieties. The drake bill is yellow and the female duck bill is light brown in color.
Orpington ducks are a productive breed that put on weight quickly, have good tasting meat and the females lay around 200 eggs per year. They are docile in temperament and are easy to look after. They are active foragers that enjoy exploring their surroundings, are happy to roam and eat many garden pests. Orpington ducks are now considered to be a rare breed and, despite their productivity, other breeds were selected to be bred for farming. Mature males weigh around 3.4 kg and the females 3.2 kg.
