Red Cap - Chicken
Redcap chickens are a rare breed that originate from Derbyshire, England. It has a large rose comb, hence ‘redcap’, that can grow up to 8 cm in size. It has brown feathers that have black tips. This breed is has red earlobes yet lays white shelled eggs, whereas typically only breeds with white earlobes lay white eggs.
It is a good layer, producing around 160 eggs per year, but they rarely go broody. It is a good table bird, but is slow to grow so mainly kept for eggs. Their excellent foraging skills means that they enjoy an active free range environment. They can be wild in temperament, so not recommended for smaller runs and they can be flighty, so enclosures must be high enough to contain them.
Redcaps are a hardy breed that are not susceptible to common ailments. Mature males weigh around 3.4 kg and the females 2.7 kg. Bantam sizes of this breed are available.
