Rhode Island Red - Chicken
Rhode Island Reds were developed in the USA and as the name suggests, are from Rhode Island. Originally, they were bred as a dual purpose breed. Now it is often prized for being a good egg layer and selective breeding has encouraged this trait.
The average hens lay around 250 brown eggs per year, although some can produce more. It has dark red and brown feathers, red earlobes and yellow legs. There are single and rose combed varieties.
They are a breed that is very hardy and can tolerate hot and cold temperatures. They enjoy foraging and need to be active, yet they are quiet and easy to handle. The cocks can sometimes be aggressive with each other, so plenty of space and a free range set up is recommended. Hens can go broody. The mature males weigh around 3.8 kg and the females 2.9 kg. Bantam versions are available.
