Silkie Bantam - Chicken
The Silkie Bantam is an ornamental breed originated from the Far East. Their fur-like feathers give them a fluffy appearance and they have black skin. They have crests, feathered legs, five toes, blue earlobes and a walnut comb. The color varieties are black, partridge, blue, buff, white and grey, and any of these varieties can be bearded.
The hens lay around 100 eggs per year, are very broody and make good mothers, and they are often so keen to brood that they will happily raise chicks from other poultry such as ducks and geese. Silkie Bantams are active, very tame and enjoy human company.
Care must be taken if kept in a flock with other breeds as they do tend to get bullied by other chickens. They must be kept dry and free from mud due to their feathered legs, and despite their cosy appearance they do not tolerate cold temperatures.
