Styrian chickens are an old, heritage breed that is native to Slovene and Austria, although they have many of the characteristics found in a lot of Mediterranean breeds. They have a straight comb, red wattles and white earlobes. The color varieties that have been developed are light brown, barred, white and partridge. The partridge color is the most preserved of all the varieties.

It is a dual purpose breed that produces good quality meat. The hens are good layers and produce around 245 eggs per year. They do not often go broody. Styrians are a hardy breed that are not susceptible to getting ailments such as colds. They are active, yet docile in temperament, easy to handle and are a good choice for beginner poultry keepers. They enjoy foraging in a free range environment, yet are adaptable to smaller enclosures. Mature males weigh around 3 kg and the females around 2.5 kg.
