Sumatra - Chicken
Sumatra chickens are a rare breed that originate from the island of Sumatra, Java and Borneo in Indonesia. They resemble the Jungle Fowl and have long flowing tail feathers and a pea comb. They are usually kept for showing purposes. Their color is a glossy black with a green sheen to it, and they have purple faces.
They behave more like pheasants than domestic chickens, and enjoy foraging in bushy areas with lots of cover. The hens lay around 100 eggs per year, they are good brooders and mothers. The males can be aggressive with each other during the breeding season and, unlike other breeds, they have numerous spurs on their legs.
Sumatra chickens are active, hardy and require a free range set up. They fly well and also have the ability to jump. Mature males weigh around 2.2 kg and the females 1.8 kg. There are bantam sizes available.
