White-Faced Black-Spanish - Chicken
The White-Faced Black Spanish chickens originates from the Mediterranean, and were once called ‘The Fowls of Seville’. They have white skin on their faces and overdeveloped white earlobes that contrasts with the red wattles and single comb. The comb should stand up on the males, and flop to one side on the females. The glossy black feathering has a green sheen to it. The white face does not fully develop for a year, after the first molt.
The hens lay a good number of large eggs, around 180 per year, and do not go broody. This breed can be noisy, but are have good temperaments. They are active foragers that enjoy a free range set up, and they can be flighty. They are not cold hardy and their combs need to be protected from frost. Mature males weigh around 3.6 kg and the females 2.9 kg. Bantam sizes are available.
