Ten-Month Poultry Exports Reach $240 Million

ARGENTINA - Shipments for the period January to October 2008 were up by 35 per cent in volume and 60 per cent in value compared to the same period in 2007.

During the period January to October 2008, the National Board for Agrifood and Health and Quality (SENASA)-audited exports of fresh meat and processed poultry products were 160,116 tons and $240.7 million, which is equivalent to a 35 per cent increase in volume and 60 per cent in dollar-value. In the same period of 2007, the figures were 118,281 tonnes and $149.8 million, respectively.

Of the total shipments, fresh meat - whole birds, breast and thigh - accounted for 114,064 tonnes and a value of $180.6 million, an increase of 53 per cent in volume and 82 per cent in value. The main markets for Argentinian poultry were Venezuela and Chile, which together accounted for almost half of poultry meat export volume. Other significant markets were South Africa, US, the Netherlands, UK and Germany.

For the period January to September 2008, exports of poultry products, claws, wings and cuts were also up on the same period of 2007 - by 7 per cent in volume and 22 per cent in value to 42,582 tonnes and $48.9 million. The main markets for these products were China, Hong Kong and Vietnam.

SENASA-audited exports of processed poultry products made single-digit increases compared to the previous year to reach 3,470 tonnes and $11.2 million. Germany and the Netherlands accounted for the great majority of these exports.
