Weekly US Broiler Hatchery Report
US - The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) reports that while the number of broiler-type eggs set was down two per cent, the number of chicks placed was down three per cent compared to the same week last year.Broiler-type eggs set in 19 selected states down two per cent
Commercial hatcheries in the 19-state weekly programme set 193 million eggs in incubators during the week ending 12 September 2009. This was down two per cent from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier.
Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 84 per cent.
Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier.
Broiler chicks placed down three per cent
Broiler growers in the 19-state weekly programme placed 166 million chicks for meat production during the week ending 12 September 2009. Placements were down three per cent from the comparable week a year earlier.
Cumulative placements from 28 December 2008 to 12 September 2009 were 6.22 billion, down five per cent from the same period a year earlier.
