Switzerland Reports Newcastle Disease Outbreak
SWITZERLAND - An outbreak of Newcastle Disease has been reported by Mr Hans Wyss, Chief Veterinary Officer, Switzerland. The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification yesterday, 11 January 2012. The outbreak was first observed on 4 January and confirmed on the same date.
The affected population consists of hobby flock with ornamental pigeons (Takla- and Adana-pigeons). However, this outbreak has no connection to the Newcastle disease outbreak in poultry in Neuchâtel, reported in November 2011, according to OIE.
The outbreak took place in Aargau and 26 birds were found susceptible, out of which seven cases were reported. While six deaths were recorded, one bird was destroyed.
The source of the outbreak remains inconclusive.
