Move Made Towards More Animal Friendly Systems
BELGIUM- Carrefour Belgium, a subsidiary of one of the world’s largest retailers, will move towards more animal welfare friendly requirements with its contractors.
This initiative will benefit millions of animals each year and Eurogroup is encouraging other food retailers across Europe to demonstrate real concern for the welfare of animals.
The three main changes Carrefour has committed to include in addition to its current requirements are:
- The end of the sale of meat from castrated piglets by the end of 2013
- The complete withdrawal of meat from animals slaughtered without prior stunning, including halal meat from November 2012
- The start of negotiations with suppliers to ensure that in 2013 only eggs from cage free systems of production are used to manufacture their own brand products.
