OIE Reports HPAI Outbreaks in Mechi, Narayani and Lumbini
NEPAL - The Nepalese veterinary authorities have reported nine outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Mechi, Lumbini and Narayani districts.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received follow-up report no. 7 on 11 April. The affected population comprises backyard birds of different age groups raised in free range systems, commercial broiler flocks and commercial layer flocks.
A total of 10901 birds showed signs of susceptibility, out of which 3982 cases were reported. All affected birds were reported dead, while the remaining 6919 birds were destroyed.
According to the OIE, the birds showed respiratory distress, nervous signs and all affected birds died. Cleaning and disinfection activities in the infected premises are completed.
Intensive surveillance activities are ongoing throughout the country.
The source of the outbreaks remains inconclusive.
Some of the measures applied by OIE in conjunction with the country's authorities include control of wildlife reservoirs, stamping out, quarantine, movement control inside the country, screening, disinfection of infected premises/establishment(s), dipping/spraying and prohibition of vaccination.
