Good and Bad News from EU Manure Investigations
UK - EU livestock producers are relieved to hear that the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) will not amend thresholds for pigs, poultry and cattle but the farmers union says concern remains over manure spreading measures from combustion plants.

By: This comes after a European Commission review procedure into the Industrial Emissions Directive that has been ongoing since 2010.
Emission thresholds for livestock were scrutinised but it has been decided that current levels will stay.
“This is a great relief for the livestock sector and we are pleased to see that commonsense has prevailed," said Dr Diane Mitchell, NFU Chief Environment Officer.
Manure spreading legislation however, is still on review. Further investigations have been announced for manure spreading from combustion plants with less than 50 megawatts output.
Dr Mitchell has stated that the NFU will urge the commission to consider nutrient management and to acknowledge that national controls exist for combustion plants.
“We are making sure that we are closely following the discussions in Brussels on the review of the EU Thematic Strategy to ensure that we have a satisfactory outcome for British farmers and growers,” added Dr Mitchell.
