OIE Reports LPAI in Utrecht, Netherlands
NETHERLANDS - The Dutch veterinary authorities have reported an outbreak of low pathogenic avian influenza at a poultry farm in Utrecht.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification on 3 June 2013. The outbreak was initially observed on 31 May and on 1 June, a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test was conducted at the Central Veterinary Institute in Lelystad, confirming the presence of the H7N1 virus.
A total of 10750 birds showed signs of susceptibility, out of which 5000 cases were reported. All 10750 birds were destroyed.
According to the OIE, on 1 June 2013, a 1 km protection zone has been established. In this one-km zone there are 11 other premises with poultry.
Screening of these premises starts on 3 June 2013. All susceptible animals on the infected farm have been culled.
The source of the outbreak has not yet been determined.
Note by the OIE Animal Health Information Department: H5 and H7 avian influenza in its low pathogenic form in poultry is a notifiable disease as per Chapter 10.4. on avian influenza of the Terrestrial Animal Health Code (2012).
