AUSTRALIA - A group opposing a planned chicken farm in central Victoria says it believes an environmental analysis of the development would confirm its concerns.

ABC reports that the Mount Alexander Shire is assessing a permit application for 24 broiler sheds at Baringhup, between Castlemaine and Maryborough.

The council decided this week to ask the Planning Minister to order an environmental effects statement (EES) to help it make its decision.

The Keep Baringhup Clean committee's Peter Liston says he is pleased with the decision, although the effects of the project are not just environmental.

"It'll back it up with all those facts but what it doesn't take into account is the road congestion, having 5,000 B-doubles driving along country roads and people trying to move stock and farm machinery," he said.

"The whole project's just in the complete inappropriate area."
