The veterinary authority sent an Immediate Notification dated 2 June to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

The report describes four outbreaks of Newcastle disease starting between 20 and 25 May in three regions in the north-east of the country. The first was in Bordj Bou Arreridj, with subsequent outbreaks in Setif and Tebessa. All were on broiler farms.

A total of 416,200 birds were affected; 265,675 died, 73,845 were destroyed and 580 were slaughtered.

The clinical signs observed in the outbreaks were diarrhoea, ocular-nasal discharge, neurological signs, respiratory signs and high mortality.

Control measures being applied are quarantine on the infected farms, destruction and burial of carcasses, disinfection and depopulation of the infected farms and booster vaccination of the non-infected farms.

The last outbreak of Newcastle disease in Algeria was in September 2002.
