AUSTRALIA - A shire council has granted a Western Australia farmer approval for an on-farm poultry abattoir, set to minimise the distance between production and processing.

According to ABC Rural, Donnybrook-Balingup Shire Council passed the development in June for farmer Jeff Pow to set up the facility at Balingup, 230 kilometres south of Perth.

Starting processing this spring, the ‘micro-abattoir’ will cater for chickens and ducks.

Mr Pow, who expects to be processing 400 birds every fortnight, said he is processing to online pre-orders.

"That's part of the trick of bringing the value chain back onto the farm, so we don't have distributors, we deal directly with the public," he said.
