Uruguay Chicken Meat Markets 'Delicate'
URUGUAY – Concern is rising over the damage a glut of chicken imports from the US and Brazil could do to Uruguay's domestic market. The threat of product being dumped on the market comes from a violation of a trade-block with Brazil, signed in 2010, and US chicken being redirected following the Russian import ban.
Brazilian meat, mainly breast, is undercutting domestic producers due to Brazilians enjoying lower wage and utility bills, reports El Observador.
The current situation is “very delicate”, according to the Uruguayan Chamber of Poultry Producers President, Miguel Fernandez.
US products need to find a new destination, as 40 per cent formerly went to Russia, said Mr Fernandez.
Producers say the damage is real and ‘already affecting’ the domestic market.
