Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza Detected in South Africa
SOUTH AFRICA - There has been five outbreaks of low pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza detected and confirmed in Western Cape province between 15 September and 29 October 2014.The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) reports a total of 2,537 cases of sub-clinical low pathogenic avian influenza among 12,355 birds.
The affected birds were commercial ostriches at farms in the regions of Hessequa, Breede Valley and Oudsthoorn.
No birds have died or been destroyed as a result.
Measure applied include quarantine, screening and movement control inside the country.
