Russia Places Restriction on US Poultry Imports
RUSSIA - The Russian Federation the Rosselkhoznadzor sent a letter to the FSIS in June, 2014 with a request to enhance the control of the compliance of animal products including poultry products exported to Russia with the requirements and standards of the Customs Union and Russia. It should be said that there are still findings of harmful and banned substance residues in poultry products imported from the USA including tetracyclines, which is a serious violation of the CU requirements and standards and is indicative of inefficient control of the US Veterinary Service.
Besides the Rosselkhoznadzor noted the common practice of the US Veterinary Service not to provide the Russian party with the information about removal of a significant number of detected violations of the CU and RF legislation which had been notified to the FSIS by the Rosselkhoznadzor.
In 2014 54 notifications were sent to the FSIS and just three of them were replied. Besides in October, 2014 the product safety control at the US poultry processing plants was changed and according to the Rosselkhoznadzor’s experts this may lead to a significant decrease in the level of US poultry product safety.
The US Veterinary Service did not inform the Rosselkhoznadzor about coming changes in advance.
Taking into account all these facts and in order to ensure safety of poultry products exported into the Russian market the Rosselkhoznadzor imposes temporary restrictions on export of poultry meat and poultry products as well as ready-to-eat (RTE) poultry meat products from US plants into the Russian Federation from 5 December, 2014.
In order to resolve this situation the Rosselkhoznadzor proposes to hold negotiations and consultations with the US party on the margins of the international agricultural exhibition Green Week in Berlin in January 2015.
