Mexico Proposes Tri-National Poultry Committee to Canada, US
MEXICO – Mexico has called on Canada and the US to join forces and form a committee to “harmonise” the regional management of poultry diseases.Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) ministers have suggested a Tri-North American Committee on poultry health and production.
Notification, detection and control of disease events will be coordinated by the group. This could result in early warning mechanisms, the creation of a vaccine bank and reference laboratories to facilitate virus identification, SAGARPA said.
If assembled, the committee would represent animal health services, producers and manufacturers from each nation.
Motivation for the approach, according to a SAGARPA spokesperson, is that “diseases do not respect borders” and wild bird migration represents a threat.
